Our story

Two rescue hounds, a stack of vet paperwork, and no way to find anything in it.

Paperless Pet wasn't a business plan. It came out of four years of shelter visits, river days, and two knee surgeries: a filing problem we couldn't solve with folders.

012022 / The shelter

How Mia picked us

Mia was our first dog together. We rescued her from our local shelter, and meeting her at all was pure chance. We were there to meet a different dog, ran into her while we waited, and asked if we could say hello.

Mia could not have cared less. She wanted nothing to do with us.

I still can't tell you what it was, but after ten minutes of being thoroughly ignored I looked at my wife and said, "She's the one."

We found out later that she'd been at the shelter more than six months and was badly kennel-stressed. Once she got home and settled, she slowly turned into the dog we know now. I'd never had a hound before, and I wasn't ready for how smart they are, or for the power of that nose. I'm still awestruck watching her find a treat hidden anywhere in the house.

02Months later / Two cities over

Then there were two

A few months later, visiting family a couple of cities over, I got a message that their local shelter was full and needed adopters. We looked at the list, and there he was: another Plott Hound mix, just like Mia. We looked at each other and left for the shelter right then.

It took an hour to get there. We arrived twenty minutes before closing. The staff let us meet him anyway, and I'm glad they did. Ten minutes later we were signing paperwork and loading Kratos into the car.

03Four years / Of adventures

The adventures, and the paperwork

Camping, hiking, the river on hot days. Mia and Kratos became inseparable.

It turns out big dogs who go on adventures are very good at hurting themselves. A broken leg, then two TPLO surgeries (a knee repair, if you've been lucky enough never to need one), and arthritis visits that haven't stopped since. We were buried in vet paperwork almost immediately, with no good way to store it and no way at all to find anything in it.

Why this exists

What the paperwork looked like by year four.

years of vet visits, surgeries, and boosters.

folders holding all of it, in no particular order.

0

ways to search it when a kennel needed a vaccine date that day.

We looked for something that already did this. What we found mostly didn't, and where it did, it came with a catch.

So we built somewhere to keep the records where you can actually find them: easy to store, easy to search, and there when a boarding kennel or a new vet asks.
